Forget the how for now, start with your why

“We thought that we had the answers,
it was the questions we had wrong.”

Big change may or may not require big action. Sometimes the most effective change happens through tiny actions that are connected by a thread of purpose.
I've noticed that when we try to figure out the answers and force solutions, we can hit walls that feel insurmountable to climb.
One of my favorite exercises I've learned and practiced in Design Thinking processes is the 5 why's exercise.
- First, you think about a problem, idea, or desired state that you are designing a solution or strategy for.
- Then, you ask "why does this matter?"
- When you come up with your answer, then you ask "why is this important" (or some other version of why)
- Repeat 3 more times until you have answered "why" at least 5 times.
1. Why is this helpful?
Digging deeper into your core why, helps you to uncover the key drivers or values that are motivating the change you want to create
2. Why is this important?
If we are connected with the true purpose of our actions they can be easier to sustain over time.
3. Why does this matter?
Because sustaining your actions will get you closer to the results you desire.
4. Why?
Because success is a result of the cumulative steps or pivots made intentionally.
5. Why is this important?
If you are clear results you want and the "why" behind it you can get creative about the options of "how" to take the steps to get there.
I love this activity because its scalable. It can be used anywhere you are craving some clarity or in need of motivation as it can rekindle a fire of purpose in you that might be smoldering.
I hope you have fun with it!
